A recent article from TechCrunch: Reddit Tries To Compete the Open-Source Way

I think its similar to (contrib) modules that are plugins for Drupal that extend, build or enhance Drupal core functionality. ~! For example: check out the Drigg module to setup your very own Digg or Reddit technology clone website.
